Gleditsia triacanthos inermis

5 gallon pot

This is a truly multi-purpose tree! It is a thornless and nearly seedless variety that produces greenish yellow, fragrant blossoms and large, brown seed pods that are around 8 in long, and can reach up to 18  in long! Both pods and seeds of this species are edible. The pulp from the pods can be made into a very sweet pulp and dried to make sugar. The seeds can be roasted and used for a coffee substitute.

It is a great nectar tree for bees and native wasp varieties, and fodder plant for livestock. The leaves turn a striking and attractive yellow in the fall. The wood is a beautiful hardwood suitable for many products requiring rot resistant wood.

Honey locust is a highly tolerant tree, and can withstand drought conditions, saline soils, high summer heat, wind, polluted soils, and compact soils. This makes it ideal for erosion control and to stabilize poor soil on hillsides.
